‘the poetry drug’ by Orla McGinnity
she and I book an airbnb online
we want to get away from prying eyes
somewhere we can create
a mini-break
we’re both cutting down on drink
but we agree one of the nights
to take x otherwise known as
the poetry drug
she took it at a party once
it ended badly but with me
she says it will be different
we rub it lovingly
on each other’s gums
and solemnly promise
to hold each other’s hair
should the urge
arise to be glib
abstract obvious italic
or ironic the domestic
setting does the job
falling on the floor
like heartfelt leaves
we are curiously reassured
to see strange faces
in familiar frames
waiting like topsoil on the carpet
we listen to the whispers
of objects
